About Skiathos National Park (Pine Forest Reserve)

Skiathos National Park, also known as the Pine Forest Reserve, is located on the Greek island of Skiathos in the northern Aegean Sea. The park covers a significant portion of the island’s interior, characterized by dense Aleppo pine forests, rocky hillsides, and sandy coastal areas. Established to protect the island’s unique flora, fauna, and landscapes, it is one of the few remaining extensive pine forests in the region following past deforestation events. The ecology is dominated by Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis), Mediterranean shrubs, and native wildflowers. Wildlife includes native birds, reptiles, and small mammals adapted to this Mediterranean environment. Human history on the island spans centuries and includes traditional settlements and historic churches found near the park boundaries. Visitors are drawn to the park for its numerous hiking trails and unspoiled beaches like Koukounaries, which lies adjacent to the reserve and is often hailed as one of Greece’s most beautiful. The park offers peaceful hiking paths that traverse shady woodlands and lead to scenic viewpoints overlooking the Aegean Sea. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts find the area rewarding for spotting rare species and enjoying the tranquil natural setting. The reserve balances conservation with sustainable tourism, providing marked trails and informational signage to protect its delicate environment. It is a popular destination for both daytime exploration and longer outdoor adventures during the warm Mediterranean seasons.
